Lost Communities

Using testimony from impacted residents, photos, and other historic objects, this page highlights items from the History Center collections that show the traces of the neighborhoods and communities that have been lost to freeway construction, gentrification, restrictive covenants, redevelopment, as well as the impact to the residents and businesses forced to leave.

This collection of History Center artifacts, documents and photographs was put together by University of California - San Diego interns from Professor Nancy Kwak’s HIUS 144: Lost Neighborhoods of San Diego class.
